Midnight Runaway
Its almost midnight... its almost time to leave this city. Welcome to Midnight Runaway -- a short arcade racing game with about 5 minutes of gameplay.
About
Highly recommend you download the game and play with a controller. This enables Rumble support which significantly adds to the game feel.
This is my submission for the GMTK 2026 Game Jam -- themed Countdown.
Controls
Take your pick! I tried to make everything I could think of work.
* KB/M
* Controllers
* Mobile touch screen
* W/S to move up and down, D to move right
* Up-Arrow / Down-Arrow to move up and down, Right-arrow to move right
* Mobile touch screen (tap to accelerate, pan up and down to move vertically)
* Spacebar to move right
Mobile Support
The game should function on mobile! I tested it on my iPad and iPhone mini. I encountered a lot of weirdness with fullscreen support, but I'm pretty sure that's on Apple.
Pixel Art and Credits
All pixel art and visual elements were done by yours truly during the game jam. My wife did an incredible job on the title / hero images.
Music is from Luova, from here: https://luova.itch.io/retrowave-music-pack
Engine sounds are proprietary, I purchased a license to use them for this project from here: https://www.construct.net/en/game-assets/sounds/sound-effects/motorbike-engines-...
Other misc sounds (i.e. bass drum, cymbol, etc.) from misc on Pixabay.
Inspiration
If you have not had an opportunity to check out Black Emperor, I highly advise it. You can likely find it in a local arcade. Black Emperor has two controls -- a wheel and a button. It is very addicting and chaotic, be prepared to lose your quarters in an 80s style.

Download
Install instructions
Rumble is supported in the downloaded versions. Controller support should work in all major browsers. (Note: controller support did not work on Linux and Firefox.)
Should work out of the box on Windows and Linux.
MacOS is not currently signed, so you'll run into Gatekeeper errors.
